Initially popular in the 1700’s for its sweet Sauternes, it was the ‘1855 Classification’, ranking the best producers in the region that established Bordeaux red blend wines reputation.
Over 90% of Bordeaux wines are red made with principally Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, whose vines originated here, and the famous Bordeaux blends have been a source of inspiration around the world.
Bordeaux reds are medium to full bodied with bold aromas of blackcurrant and plums.
Vintages are key here with some of the best of recent years including 2015, 2010, 2009, 2008 and 2005.
