Pierluigi Tolaini is the visionary owner of the Tolaini Estate, which is situated in Vallenuova, near Siena. Tolaini believe the best wines can be made only from the best fruit. They organically farm 50 hectares of vines that are some of the most densely planted in Italy at 11,000 plants per hectare. This enables them to grow less bunches per plant to obtain maximum fruit quality. The Montebello vineyard has signature galestro (friable clay and limestone) soils, a highly appreciated characteristic of Chianti’s terroir. The San Giovanni vineyard has more porous tufa soils. Shortly after the purchase of the property in 1998, the soils were nutritionally rebalanced, the vineyards replanted, and a state of the art winery was built. The new vines included clones of Sangiovese, as well as international varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Pierluigi knows that to be successful you need the best team. Rug- gero Mazzilli, famed Tuscan consultant known for his work in the Clas- sico area with organic farming, and the world famous Michel Rolland as consulting enologist are part of the team at Tolaini. Davide Xodo, Diego Bonato and Francesco Rosi are the young in-house team. The wines have received much international acclaim and continue to get the recognition they deserve.
